The Signpost 2

I have decided to accept Lisa Rivero’s challenge to write 30 blog posts for the month of September. I intend to try to add 10 posts to each of my 3 blogs during the month of September. Sprite’s Site will feature posts about posts!

The second signpost is the one I use to show contact details on Gifted Resources information page.

I needed to prepare a single page handout which could be used to provide a basic introduction to some of the important reference material and explain how Gifted Resources can help locate services and information relating to giftedness.

I created the page pictured the top of this post for the purpose. I am happy that almost all the topics I would most want to discuss are represented in some way in the picture.

I managed to include the signpost for information Gifted Resources can provide, all the methods of contacting me plus words or pictures relating to key issues such as

  • The specific educational and social/emotional needs of gifted people,
  • The Columbus Group definition of giftedness as asynchronous development
  • The Bell curve showing distribution of IQ levels in the population
  • Gagne’s DMGT model of development of innate giftedness into fully developed talent (emphasising the importance of internal and situation influences)
  • The diagram of underachievement (showing our role as teachers and parents in building a guard rail to prevent students falling into underachievement)
  • Myths surrounding giftedness
  • Dabrowski’s Overexcitabilities represented by the Dabrowski Dogs

You can read more about the creation of the page at

CHAOS Plan Check

We are now three quarters of the way through 2013 and it is time to pause and evaluate the progress I have made in the plans for this year.
You can read about the plans and how they were made in this entry posted in January  https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/jos-chaos-plan-2/
This is the mind map of the plans

Gifted Resources has continued to engage in project work with Borderlands this year http://www.borderlands.org.au/
The main foundation of Gifted Resources is the website http://www.giftedresources.org/  The website main page has been updated. Some sections still need revision. Some of the links have been checked and made to open in new windows but there are more still to do.

wheel02

So far this year I have written a newsletter each month and a second newsletter in March and also three Extension and Holiday Programs newsletters.

wheel03

I compiled a new hard copy Info Pack for 2013 and we are in the process of creating a CD version of it.

infopacks01

wheel04

At present most of my consultation work is conducted by phone, email and post.
Using Skype has enhanced the effectiveness of phone consultation and made it a more affordable method. I have continued this so far during the year.

wheel05

In March I talked to a group of parents and teachers at Village School. I would still like to give other in person or online webinar presentations this year.

wheel06

I have not organized any Film Discussions so far this year but I do have 3 plastic crates filled with Film Discussion kits ready for use and another option would be to add the kits to the Gifted Resources Library collection so that groups can borrow a kit to facilitate holding their own Film Discussion.

wheel07

I have very nearly finished re-cataloguing the books in the Gifted Resources library.
Several tubs of information have been sorted and I now have two tubs of conference handout papers and two tubs of articles. Some of the longer articles have been bound in folders and catalogued separately.
When the re-cataloguing is complete the Library page can be restored to the Gifted Resources website.

wheel08

This year I have only posted 16 entries on the Gifted Resources blog.
At the end of May Gifted Resources website suffered hacking caused by vulnerability to exploitation in WordPress, the platform for both Gifted Resources blog and Sprite’s Site blog.

Because of the problems the blog now has a new address
Gifted Resources Blog http://giftedresources.wordpress.com/
It meant that we lost the blog internal links and I had to edit all the posts on both blogs to restore broken links. Gifted Resources blog with only 50 plus posts was repaired fairly quickly.

wheel09

So far this year I have posted 67 entries on Sprite’s Site.

The blog was given a new theme when some of the illustrations appeared distorted

Sprite’s Site was again a nominee in the Best Australian Blogs competition. As part of participation the blog was given its own Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/spritessite

At the end of May Gifted Resources website suffered hacking caused by vulnerability to exploitation in WordPress, the platform for both Gifted Resources blog and Sprite’s Site blog.
Because of the problems the blog now has a new address

Sprite’s Site Blog https://spritessite.wordpress.com/

Sprite’s Site also has a completely independent Sprite’s New Site on the Edublogs platform at http://jofrei5.edublogs.org/

It means that we lost the blog internal links and I had to edit all the posts on both blogs to restore broken links. Sprite’s Site which celebrated its fourth birthday in June had over 600 posts and took a long time to clean up

wheel10

Currently I enjoy participating in groups relating to giftedness and 2E issues on Facebook and Twitter, especially the weekly #gtchat sessions on Twitter.
Sprite’s Site now has its own Facebook page

wheel11

There is always so much to learn!
MOOCs, webinars, global education conferences and many others offer so many online opportunities.

And I was able to virtually visit the WCGTC Conference in Louisville Kentucky and blog about it at http://giftedresources.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/virtually-visiting-the-wcgtc-conference-in-kentucky/

In real life I attended the VAGTC EmpowerEd conference in April and blogged about it on the Gifted Resources Blog http://giftedresources.wordpress.com/2013/05/02/vagtc-empowered-for-giftedness-conference/

wheel12

This is an area which gives me so much satisfaction and happiness.
I participate in the Brilliant Chaos Group on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/
monthly creating challenges
http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/doc/253263591368971/

In January the Twitter birds visited the circus
In February the Twitter birds made and flew kites
In March the theme was luck and the Twitter bird, Retweet, incorporated it into her NEST Ed studies
In April I created a new theme for Sprite’s Site and posts for the Best Australian Blogs 2013 competition
In May I celebrated the Month of Maybe with a Padlet sticky note wall
In June I created a set of the 2013 wheels with a Winter theme for the websites

In July I finished cleaning up the blogs with the help of the Twitter bird cleaning crew
In August I had fun creating splotches with a paint roller and turning them into scenes
And this month I created a set of wheels for Spring and the Twitter birds played games of Guess the Spring Phrase from the pictures they painted.

Regarding my personal life – this year we celebrated 40 years of marriage. Our daughter organised a lovely afternoon tea for us in the All Saint’s Rosebud church hall
I am still enjoying the quiet pace of life in Rosebud, planting flowers, shrubs, cacti and herbs and photographing the birds in the area.
In the past I have been very involved with writing and teaching church Sunday school programs. I have sorted out the several plastic tubs and now have 3 tubs of programs which I have written over the years and 2 tubs of visual aids, worksheets and background reading materials. I have arranged for these to be willed to the library of MST (formerly Bible College of Victoria). I have not started to turn these programs into online programs yet.

And to Sprite I leave…

A belated addition to my Month of Maybe To Do List http://padlet.com/wall/zbanwzr95yis updating my will.

maybewall05

I realised that the most recent version of my will was written over twenty years ago when our children were all young. It mostly related to ensuring that the children would have guardians and would be given the best possible physical and spiritual nurture and educational opportunities. Our assets, (apart from our library of theology books which was bequeathed to Bible College of Victoria), were to be sold to provide for the children.
At that stage Gifted Resources did not exist.
I had not created any intellectual property
And I did not have an online presence.

The story is quite different now.
The children are all adults.
Most of our assets do not have much monetary value but could have sentimental value and I am confident that the children will be able to work out their distribution with the help of some specific directions in my new will.

I have several tubs of church school programs which I have written which I intend to make into online courses if time and energy permit. I am hoping I can give the physical versions of the programs with the books to the Bible College.

But what does concern me is what will become of Gifted Resources and Sprite’s Site, the resources relating to giftedness that I have gathered and the programs that I have created. I do have a couple of people in mind that may be prepared to take on some of the parts of Gifted Resources work. Who do I give the computer which houses the files? Or should I make up collections of files to be given to various people and bequeath them a disk or USB drive?

At the moment I am looking into how to manage the online aspects.
For example how long do blogs remain on the net? How can I will my website to ensure it will continue to be updated and remain useful? How can I authorise some accounts to be closed?
An article in The Economist discusses this and there were a few clues such in an article in The Telegraph relating to Google Inactive Accounts Manager
http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com.au/2013/04/plan-your-digital-afterlife-with.html
I will write a blog post about it and maybe share the information via Jo Hart’s Fine Focus webinars http://johart1.edublogs.org/  when I have found out more.

The Month of Maybe 3

maybewall04

Here is an update on the status of the Month of Maybe after two weeks as recorded by the Padlet sticky note wall http://padlet.com/wall/zbanwzr95y

You can see that I have not gained any more green completion ticks since my last report. https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2013/05/10/the-month-of-maybe-2/

However I have made substantial progress on the task of cataloguing Gifted Resources library. I have also updated a couple of pages on Gifted Resources website.

However I have also discovered a new diversion – the Chess Titans program on the computer and I am spending quite a bit of time endeavouring to improve my chess playing strategies. I think I qualify for a star for Procrastination!

The Month of Maybe 2

maybewall03

Here is an update on the status of the Month of Maybe after the first week as recorded by the Padlet sticky note wall http://padlet.com/wall/zbanwzr95y

So far I have scored three green completion ticks.

The Gifted Resources newsletter was prepared and sent out. It can be read online at http://www.giftedresources.org/gr/files/newsletter2013/grnewspdfmay1301.pdf

The Blog Hop post was written and can be read at https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/gifted-homeschoolers-forum-bloggers-group-blog-hop-stealth-schooling/

I created two posters which can be used if suitable at the coming 20th Anniversary WCGTC World Conference 2013 http://worldgifted2013.org/  and learned how to provide a creative commons license for them and post them on Flickr in the Gifted Education photo quotes group http://www.flickr.com/groups/1680413@N20/

brightvsgifted

brightgifted2e

In case explanation is needed:
Average riders would sit or maybe try standing on one horse
Bright ones at the top of the group could learn to Roman ride on two horses
Gifted ones, who are way beyond the top group, express the experience of their different rate and level of learning by Roman riding on two cheetahs
2E Twice Exceptional, who are both Gifted and have a learning difference or disability are trying to manage Roman riding on a cheetah and a tortoise at the same time

libraryshelves

Last weekend I bought three bookcases for the bungalow. Two of them were already assembled and have been set up. I have been able to put the contents of three of the old small bookcases into the two new ones and also to shelve the contents of two cardboard boxes of books that were sitting on the floor.
I have also continued with the work of cataloguing the Gifted Resources library.
So both of these tasks on the To Do list, although they do not yet have a completion tick beside them, at least have some progress to show on their progress level meters.

All the other tasks are still waiting to be done!

Jo’s CHAOS Plan 2

chaosmindmap02b

C-Creation:

What exactly do you want to love into existence?

I am going to use this challenge (see https://spritessite.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/jos-chaos-plan/ ) as an opportunity to consider the 2013 version of Gifted Resources, Sprite’s Site and my personal life– which in some cases means continuing with services and activities in their present form and in other cases means revising, updating or discontinuing them or creating something completely new.

H-How:

How will you know you’ve accomplished it? What kind of parameters do you need to complete your creation?
Using my image ‘Getting the 2013 wheels turning as an idea starter I will regard each activity as a separate wheel and  will be considering the activities individually with the help of mind mapping and then posting the resulting thoughts as blog posts

wheelone15c

Gifted Resources will continue to engage in project  work with Borderlands  http://www.borderlands.org.au/
The main foundation of Gifted Resources is the website http://www.giftedresources.org/  I intend to leave the website very much as it is but to update it as needed. Some sections need a complete revision, some just need updating and some need all the links to be checked and made to open in new windows.  Possibly a shopping cart may be added in future – I am still considering this.

wheelone06b

The other main activities of Gifted Resources are the monthly email newsletters and the four Holiday Programs newsletters. I will continue to produce these.
At present the newsletters are sent as a PDF attachment to regular emails and are also posted on the Gifted Resources website. The most recent edition can be read by following a link on the main page and back copies can be read in the Newsletter Archives http://www.giftedresources.org/gr/newsletter.htm

I may consider changing the form of the newsletter as I have seen some very attractive templates for email newsletter which are not sent as an attachment.

wheelone02b

For many years now I have been compiling the Gifted Resources Information Pack.
See http://www.giftedresources.org/gr/infopacks.htm

It is a collection of brochures, pamphlets, articles and business cards from psychologists, education consultants, parent support groups and extension programs and information about conferences and events relating to giftedness and to gifted and twice exceptional students.
The contents of the pack vary from time to time to reflect the currency and availability of the information. Although most providers now have websites and publish their information digitally, the Information Pack collection of hard copy flyers is still useful in many circumstances.

I am currently compiling the 2013 Info Pack

wheelone16b

At present most of my consultation work is conducted by phone, email and post.
Using Skype has enhanced the effectiveness of phone consultation and made it a more affordable method.

wheelone10b

Presentations can be given in person or in the form of webinars or Skype sessions
Last year I gave presentations for Jo Hart’s Fine Focus webinars http://johart1.edublogs.org/?s=Jo+Freitag  using Blackboard Collaborate and hope to do so again this year.

I will be talking to a group of parents at Village School in March and would like to give other in person presentations during the year.

wheelone14c

Last year I presented a Film Discussion on the film The Incredibles to a Lunch n Learn Group in Texas using Skype
It worked well. The Skype connection was so good that I felt as if I were in the room with the participants. I would be happy to do more Film Discussions in that way.
Also as I have 3 plastic crates filled with Film Discussion kits another option would be to add the kits to the Gifted Resources Library collection and groups can borrow a kit to facilitate holding their own Film Discussion.

wheelone05b

I am in the process of re-cataloguing the Gifted Resources library
When the re-cataloguing is complete the Library page can be restored to the Gifted Resources website.

wheelone09b

In August 2012 I received an email telling me that I needed to either close the Gifted Resources blog or update it to the newer format. My tech guru, Jamie Tarling, put in a lot of work to update the blog and transfer old posts into it.
Since then I have posted reviews of books, programs, conferences, webinars etc to the Gifted Resources blog and I will continue to use it the same way in 2013.
At present I am reading three books published by Gifted Homeschoolers Forum and hope to post a review soon.

wheelone12b

Sprite’s Site blog  has the theme of Giftedness and 2E Twice Exceptional issues
In About the Topics you can read about the issues that have been discussed
The About Sprite page  describes the main theme of the blog.
Sprite is the twice exceptional (gifted with a learning difficulty or difference) cartoon character who is the Poster Child to illustrate Jo Freitag’s Feetspeak: 2E shoes presentations.
Feetspeak: 2E shoes is about planning programs that will be suitable for gifted students who also have a learning difficulty or different learning style using Edward De Bono’s 6 Action Shoes as the planning tool.
Sprite is always depicted as having an injured left ankle and needing to wear different shoes on each foot to illustrate the concept that she needs different educational provisions for both her giftedness and her disability.
The About the Characters page describes the other characters you will meet on the blog.

I enjoy posting to Sprite’s Site as it gives plenty of scope for imagination and creativity as well as being able to present facts and opinions in a narrative form.

I would love to be able to produce books or e-books about the Sprite’s Site characters.
Last Christmas I gave mouse pads with the Twitter Bird bowers printed on them as gifts to some techie friends and I can imagine Twitter birds adorning mugs etc.

wheelone03b

Currently I enjoy participating in groups relating to giftedness and 2E issues on Facebook and Twitter, especially the weekly #gtchat sessions on Twitter.
I will consider possible expansion of participation in these areas – perhaps a Gifted Resources Facebook page or revisiting my Linked In profile which I set up but have not used.

I also belong to a couple of NING communities and should visit them more often.

wheelone04b

There is always so much to learn!

There are conferences in real life.
I will be attending the VAGTC EmpowerEd conference in April.
http://www.vagtc.asn.au/empowered-for-giftedness
Local libraries and groups offer real life opportunities.

MOOCs, webinars, global education conferences and many others offer so many online opportunities.
At the end of 2012 I participated in an online course about Digital Badges  which led to Khan Academy http://www.khanacademy.org/ and several other sources of self education which I would like to pursue if I have the necessary time, energy and ability.
At the moment I am trying to learn about creating computer games at Gamestar Mechanic  and programming with Scratch http://scratch.mit.edu/

wheelone08b

This is an area which gives me so much satisfaction and happiness.
I will continue to participate in the Brilliant Chaos Group on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/
monthly creating challenges
http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/doc/253263591368971/

wheelone07b

Regarding my personal life –  this year we will be celebrating 40 years of marriage.
I am enjoying the quiet pace of life in Rosebud and would like to continue to walk on the beach and appreciate the many species of birds that visit the garden.
In the past I have been very involved with writing and teaching church Sunday School programs and I have several plastic tubs of programs which I have written over the years which I would like to turn into online programs.  The church we are currently attending does not have a children’s program at the moment .

You can see on the mind map the purple dotted lines and text. These are the Wish lists or Possible? to do lists. They are the maybe I could?s . They are the What if…?
They are the Perhaps and the Imaginational Dabrowski says…. Lists
But it sounds more lofty and official to call them Aspirations!

Jo’s CHAOS plan

During the first week of each month the Brilliant Chaos Group on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/ issue a creating challenge
http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/doc/253263591368971/

This year the group is also encouraging a yearlong CHAOS challenge http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/brilliantchaosonline/doc/544943702200957/

Here is a my response to the yearlong CHAOS challenge

C-Creation:

What exactly do you want to love into existence?

I am going to use this challenge as an opportunity to consider the 2013 version of Gifted Resources, Sprite’s Site and my personal life– which in some cases means continuing with services and activities in their present form and in other cases means revising, updating or discontinuing them or creating something completely new.

A-Achievable:

Can you realistically complete this creation in the time allotted? What resources do you need to do so?

I do not know. I can embark on it and see how far I can get. Some aspects will be easy to achieve and others at the moment are only aspirations and wishes.

O-OMG (Oh.My.Geefwidiousness!*):
*Geefwidious®: A word of Brilliant Chaos’ Chaotish Language®, meaning full of wonder and discovery with a sense of satisfaction.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how geefwidious* is this creation for you?

Which end of the scale is the most geefwidious? I hope it will be the maximum geefwidious possible!

S-Schedule:

How long do you want to take to achieve this creation? How often do you want to work toward it?
This will be a year long project and different aspects of it will be undertaken at varying times.
